Part 2: Home Page and Navigation System, Final Project

Image
Last week I had only received peer feedback from one student for this project, but the one I got was really useful about removing my email from the top of the contact page which I did.   In order to get feedback and suggestions I consulted family and friends on what they thought and their reactions to my portfolio.   This was helpful to get a few more suggestions which got me to thinking about how I could improve my work. I realized that the home page looked very blank which made it feel uncreative and uninspiring.   In order to fix this, I made a bunch of shapes in Adobe Photoshop and used it as siding for the home page to create a cool frame effect but also make it feel like there is motion happening behind.   Photoshop was very easy to use to create the shapes.   Next, I added a blue square in the middle to match the shapes. I changed the shape around my painting in it to a star shape.   I thought this really help emphasize my acrylic painting o...

Part 1: Project concepts and first draft Website Design & Navigation System

Image
First step was I signed up for Wix and created my account: https://ashleymserafino.wixsite.com/ashleyserafinoportfo/portfolio I selected a bare, minimalist template so that I could have maximum flexibility in creating my site.    I started by finding a basic template. I found one of the temples to be visually pleasing and changed the image to my painting.     The pages I created include a Homepage, About page, Portfolio page and Contact page. I wanted the home page to look simple yet still make people want to check out my art.   On the Homepage, I thought it would be fun to take my Tuxedo Sam painting and use it as a focal point.   I then changed the button to the words “View” with an arrow. After working on the home page, I decided to work on the portfolio tab which is the most important part of the site which shows all your artwork.   I gathered all my images in to Wix and separated them into folders.    The folders I came up w...

AI Photoshop Project

Image
To begin, I first found one of the photos I took on a rail trail this past week and as you can see it is very dull and gloomy since spring is not here yet. I decided to take this winter picture of the trail and use Ai to make a yellow brick road!  I used the 2024 Photoshop AI feature "Select Subject" and I was surprised it ended up selecting the path. The AI made three different paths and I went with the first one, the yellow color was more of an orange so I made a block of the bright yellow and changed the blending mode to Soft light. Then I selected each side of the path and had the AI make red poppy flowers, it took 3 times to generate the poppies correctly because at first they weren’t following the path.   I then had it add a rainbow above the bridge. After that I had it added a bird, because it made the place feel less empty. At this point I realized that the place will look really bland and gray regardless of what I do, and I started adding things randomly. C...

Book Cover Design (Part 2)

Image
Explanation of Design Choice: The cover I ended up creating was from the first design.   I really like the idea simplicity being used and to create a feeling of a far away landscape so you can feel the miles of walking that Bilbo Baggins would find so daunting at first.   I decided to put Smaug the dragon as the main focus.   Smaug is extremely important character to the plot because the adventure is based on Smaug stealing the treasure from the dwarves.   Also, I wanted to achieve with the coloration of the cover that this was an old tale from long ago. I started by finding all my images: The movie hobbit logo, the lonely mountain, the coffee-stained paper, the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Logo and the Scan Code.   The logo and lonely mountain images were used as a reference for the hand drawn sketches I created.   I also used the Gestalt Principle by continuing round mountain effects from the front to the back of the cover.   Using this principle he...

Book Cover Design (Part 1)

Image
The Hobbit The book I chose is The Hobbit book because I read it last week and it is one of my favorites! The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien For the covers I used other covers of the hobbit for getting ideas. One thing to note is that I did the covers backwards and when working on the finished version this will be fixed.   I also drew all my sketches to the 6 inches Width by 9 inches Height.   The spine is 1 inch across. Sketch 1: Reason for design: For this sketch I found a sketch of the lonely mountain and used that as a main reference. This map I made isn’t really accurate to the story but it shows that they travel far to get to the goal! Background Color = Old Paper Why this Color = I’d used an image of a very old coffee stained paper to give the effect of a map. Image = I’d redraw the elements shown in the sketch Logo = I’d find a logo of the hobbit without the background and put it in the Top as shown with the title box Logo ...

Event Poster Final

Image
The sketch I selected from my six was the one that I received the best compliments from my classmates.  The feedback was very helpful and it was great because I had myself narrowed it down to two choices.  The sketch #6 was the finalist.  I think sketch #6 was a favorite because it was the one to be the most interesting.  It also allowed me to tell more of the story about the location of the event which is fascinating because it was the location of the original 1969 Woodstock.  Today you can go to this location called Bethel Woods and see concerts, festivals, markets and there are many class programs for all ages.  There is also a cool museum at Bethel Woods that showcases Woodstock 1969 music festival.  I was able to go to the Halloween Festival when taking a class at Bethel Woods.  The Halloween Festival is super impressive with beautifully carved pumpkins and I even got to meet the artist of the pumpkin sculptures. I first found the ...

Event Poster Sketch

Image
I decided to create an event poster for Halloween Event that happens over at Bethel Woods which is where the 1969 Woodstock event had taken place.   I have taken classes and did an internship over there.   Also, I have been to a few of the events and have been through the museum a few times.   It is such a beautiful place that is rich in history with all the memories of the amazing artist who had played at the 1969 Woodstock festival.   The Halloween festival is a fun walk through at night where you can see carved pumpkins that are used to create different sculptures.   Some of the pumpkins are carved out foam and other had been created by molds.   I actually got to meet the artist who did most of the carvings that you see there.   I do have some images of the festival on my phone which I may be able to use.   I’m planning on making sure that I use white space effectively to   make my images and informational text stand out. The ...
