Book Cover Design (Part 1)
The Hobbit
The book I chose is The Hobbit book because I read it last week and it is one of my favorites!
The Hobbit
by J. R. R. Tolkien
For the covers I used other covers of the hobbit for
getting ideas.
One thing to note is that I did the covers backwards and
when working on the finished version this will be fixed. I also drew all my sketches to the 6 inches
Width by 9 inches Height. The spine is 1
inch across.
Sketch 1:
Reason for design: For this sketch I found a sketch of the
lonely mountain and used that as a main reference. This map I made isn’t really
accurate to the story but it shows that they travel far to get to the goal!
Background Color = Old Paper
Why this Color = I’d used an image of a very old
coffee stained paper to give the effect of a map.
Image = I’d redraw the elements shown in the sketch
Logo = I’d find a logo of the hobbit without the
background and put it in the Top as shown with the title box
Logo Placement = Placed at top to grab the viewer’s
attention to make sure they know this book is the hobbit.
Typography = Romana
Why this Typography = It looks very close to the logo
font
Description: A brief summary of the Hobbit without spoilers
Sketch 2:
Reason for design: This image is also meant to show the two
main places in the adventure while also hiding a ring within the image. The ring shape won’t be there so I may add a
bird near the dragon and tree.
Background Color = Blue gradient
Why this Color = This color will accentuate the other elements
like the dragon.
Image = I’d do a mix of drawing and using images that are
creative commons.
Logo = I’d find a logo of the hobbit without the
background and put it in the top as shown with the title box
Logo Placement = it is placed in the middle of a ring
shape created by the other elements
Typography = Romana
Why this Typography = It looks very close to the logo
font
Description: A brief summary of the Hobbit without spoilers
Sketch 3:
Reason for design: This image would be highly based upon
the first edition book jacket. This could even have a little sticker like thing
that says 87th anniversary edition.
Background Color = Blue and Yellow
Why this Color = This color will accentuate the other
elements like the dragon.
Image = I’d do a mix of drawing and using images that are
creative commons.
Logo = I’d find a logo of the hobbit without the
background and put it in the Top as shown with the title box
Logo Placement = it is placed in the middle of a ring
shape created by the other elements
Typography = Romana
Why this Typography = It looks very close to the logo
font
Description: The description would be under the jacket to
match the first edition.
Sketch
4:
The main focus of this image is Smaug and the gold.
Background Color = Dark hues of Red and gray
Why this Color = the dark hues would really make Smaug
stand out.
Image = I’d draw and use images.
Logo = I’d recreate the logo and curve it to make it match
the cured elements
Logo Placement = it is placed in the middle of a ring shape
created by the other elements
Typography = Romana
Why this Typography = It looks very close to the logo font
Description: this would be a summary of the story
Sketch 5:
This is highly based on the Dungeons & Dragons First
Edition Monster Manual I really liked how the underground is shown and thought
that would be so cool to put in a hobbit cover. The bear is meant to be Beorn.
Background Color = a light but bright Blue
Why this Color = this makes elements stand out
Image = I’d do a mix of drawing and using images that are
creative commons.
Logo = I’d find a logo of the hobbit without the background
Logo Placement = put it in the Top as shown with the title
box
Typography = Romana
Why this Typography = It looks very close to the logo font
Description: the description in box which would also have
alpha at 50%
Sketch 6:
This sketch is based on when Bilbo is making smoke rings in
the movie.
Background Color = very vibrant colors of green and blue
Why this Color = this makes elements stand out
Image = At the moment I’m not completely sure if I’d draw
out Bilbo or just use an image from the movie
Logo = I’d find a logo of the hobbit without the background
Logo Placement = put it in the Top as shown with the title
box
Typography = Romana
Why this Typography = It looks very close to the logo font
Description: the description in box cover with vines but
the vines would not be over the text

My own Book Description:
There was a hobbit named Biblo
Baggins who loved his comfortable life living in the shire among all his hobbit
friends. Little did Bilbo Baggins know
but he would be going on a big adventure and his life would be changed
forever. One day a wizard name Gandalf
and a company of dwarves sought him out for an adventure to go against Smaug
who was a very scary and dangerous dragon who had stolen treasure from the
dwarves. During his adventure with the
dwarves, he comes upon a magic ring and a very strange creature name Gollum who
calls the ring “My Precious”. Bilbo
discovers that he actually wasn’t as timid as he thought but rather quite
courageous.
